Healing from Sexual Assault: EMDR, Faith, and Thriving Beyond Trauma

Peaceful sunrise and lilies symbolizing healing and empowerment after trauma

February can be a challenging month for many, including myself, as a thriver of sexual assault. The journey from victim to survivor, and ultimately to thriver, is deeply personal and unique to each individual. My own path was profoundly impacted by a moment of silence—when a veteran asked about the effectiveness of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and I didn't speak up. Yet, EMDR was a pivotal part of my thriving beyond trauma.

Understanding EMDR

EMDR is a psychotherapy treatment designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. It involves a series of guided eye movements while recalling traumatic events, helping to reprocess and integrate these memories in a way that reduces their emotional charge. According to the EMDR International Association, studies have shown that 77% of individuals treated with EMDR for trauma-related conditions experience significant improvement after just a few sessions.

My Journey to Thriving

After being assaulted by someone I considered a friend, I spiraled into a deep depression, accompanied by severe anxiety and panic attacks. Traditional talk therapy didn't yield the desired results, and it was then that I was introduced to EMDR. This therapy became a lifeline, guiding me from the depths of despair to a place where I could begin to thrive.

For me, thriving means sharing my story, using my experiences to empower myself and others. The trauma hasn't vanished, but its grip on my daily functioning has loosened considerably. Rebuilding my relationship with God has been instrumental in this transition. His strength, comfort, and unwavering love have allowed me to move forward with purpose.

Embracing God's Grace

I no longer blame myself for the actions of others. The decision to seek refuge on a couch, rather than drive intoxicated, was a moment that could have led to my destruction. Instead, it became a turning point. Today, I channel those feelings of anxiety, sadness, and anger into empowerment. I commend myself for acknowledging these emotions and transforming negatives into positives.

I remind myself not to compare my journey to the trials of Job, though I find solace in the belief that, like Job, God has unwavering faith in me. His grace has shielded me time and again, even when my actions seemed to invite judgment. His love is eternal, and His comfort is always available.

Encouragement for Survivors

To survivors of trauma: I write this to encourage you and remind you that God's love is steadfast. He has sent a Comforter, residing within us, accessible every moment of every day. All we need to do is reach out to Him.

A Prayer for Healing

Heavenly Father,

We come before You, seeking Your peace and comfort for those struggling with the aftermath of trauma. For those battling depression, anxiety, anger, or sadness, may Your presence provide solace and strength.

Help us to feel Your love and grace, guiding us through the darkness into Your light. Remind us that we are never alone, for You walk with us every step of the way. May we find healing in Your eternal love and courage to share our stories, transforming pain into purpose.

In Jesus' name, we pray,

Amen.
